Personal Profile
I'm currently studying for a Particle Physics PhD at the University of Sussex. I make measurements of a rare process in which top quarks are produced. I also prepare data from the ATLAS Experiment at CERN for use in education. I use machine learning throughout my work. Outside my main work, I get involved in all sorts of projects in education, outreach, science communication and public engagement.
MY EXPERIENCE
DATA SCIENTIST, PORTSMOUTH HOSPITAL NHS TRUST
September 2019 - December 2019
I applied my expertise in data science to the world of healthcare. I carefully analysed patient safety events in the pharmacy department of a hospital, providing insight to clinical staff on areas for improvement.
INTERN, ATLAS EXPERIMENT
August 2018 - Septmeber 2018
ATLAS Open Data 13 TeV datasets’ Core developer and producer. Responsible for the development production and delivery of a new set of ATLAS Open Data samples. The aim was to deliver to the ATLAS and the HEP community new samples with real and simulated data.
INTERN, CARDIFF UNIVERSITY
June 2017 - September 2017
I was working in the Outreach group of the School of Physics & Astronomy. My main responsibility was translation of physics resources from English to Welsh. A secondary responsibility was mentoring younger work experience students.
INTERN, SCIENCE MADE SIMPLE
July 2016 - August 2016
Most of my work was in the Space Made Simple branch. I translated Science Made Simple's most popular blogs from English to Welsh. I also wrote my own blogs in English and Welsh. I assisted in delivering Space Made Simple workshops in schools.
EDUCATION
PHD UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX
September 2018 - September 2022
My research involves making precision measurements of a rare top-quark process. This is performed under the supervision of Dr Kate Shaw of the ATLAS Collaboration. I also dedicate a fraction of my time to work on the ATLAS Open Data project.
MPHYS UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER
September 2014 - June 2018
I obtained 1st class honours, with a mark of 83%. The title of my master's project thesis was "Enabling Open Science with the ATLAS Open Data project at CERN". This was performed under the supervision of Dr Darren Price.
SECONDARY SCHOOL, YSGOL CYMRAEG BRO MORGANNWG
September 2007 - June 2014
At A2 level I obtained 3 A*s in Maths, Further Maths and Chemistry, as well as 2 A's in Physics and French. At AS level I also obtained an A in Physical Education. For GCSE I obtained 13 A*s in Maths, Additional Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, ICT, English Literature, Welsh Language, French, Geography, History, Physical Education and Religious Studies, as well as 2 A's in English Language and Welsh Literature.
PRIMARY SCHOOL, YSGOL PEN Y GARTH
October 2001 - July 2007
My school was Welsh medium, which means all lessons were taught in Welsh. English is formally taught from the age of 7. In its 2016 inspection, the school was rated "good" in all departments. Since leaving, I've been back to observe Maths lessons for ages 9 to 11.
MY SKILLS
What I Do
PHYSICS OUTREACH
Outreach is about disseminating complicated science to the public and younger audiences. This is important to inspire the next generation of scientists. I'm looking to continue to develop this skill and seek a career in the field.
DATA ANALYSIS
Data Analysis means dissecting large quantities of information and drawing conclusions. The ability to extract key results is important in research. The field of particle physics is dubbed as "big data" or "data intensive", due to all the analysis which can be done.
